Schools get into Christmas spirit

The spirit of giving was evident in local
elementary and high schools, with many students, teachers and staff collecting
food, clothing and gift donations earmarked for those in need.
At HJ Cambie Secondary, the necessity of
keeping warm during the cold winter months, was top of mind.
During a two-week period, staff and students
collected new socks as well as gently used sweaters and cash donations for the
homeless who turn to the emergency ward at St. Paul’s Hospital in Downtown
Vancouver, as well as homeless youth shelter Covenant House, the Downtown
Eastside Women’s Centre, and Kidsafe Vancouver.
So many homeless enter the doors of these
facilities with wet socks with holes in them, or no socks at all.
Through donations in class, a samosa sale,
and a locker wrapping fundraiser, Cambie raised more than $650, as well as 576
pairs of new socks, and 134 sweaters. The effort was led by Cambie’s first
responder team, the Health Sciences 12 class, Interact Club and Key Club.
Band students from Grauer Elementary School
played some sweet music for customers as a show of thanks for a generous
donation by Ironwood’s Save-On-Foods toward their playground fundraising
campaign.
On Dec. 16, the school’s Grade 6 and 7 students,
under the leadership of teacher Ryan Naso, played for a couple of hours, and in
the process raised a few more dollars for sharing their music.
At Hugh Boyd Secondary, students participated
in Project Ignite the Warmth, where they collected gently used blankets,
quilts, sleeping bags, pillows, sheets, duvets and clothes including jackets
and mittens, all destined for the Downtown Eastside.
Hugh Boyd students and staff also hosted a
holiday brunch on Dec. 19, where they invited area seniors for a Christmas
meal.
